MacDermid Alpha Micromax 5642 Low-Temperature Air-Firing Silver Conductor for Glass and ITO
Type: Low-Temperature Silver Conductor
Application: Filter Conductor
Viscosity: 40–70 Pa.s
Shelf Life: 6 months
Micromax 5642 is a lead-free air-firing silver conductor capable of being fired at 400°C in a conventional belt furnace. It offers low firing temperature, good adhesion on glass and Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) coated glass, good conductivity, a smooth appearance, and excellent printability. Interconnection can be made by soldering, conductive adhesive, or other methods.
Micromax 5642 from MacDermid Alpha is a lead-free air-firing silver conductor developed for filter conductor applications. It can be fired at a peak temperature of 400°C in a conventional belt furnace, using an air atmosphere rather than a nitrogen or other controlled atmosphere. The paste delivers good adhesion on glass and Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) coated glass, which supports filter and display conductor applications where ITO is present. Interconnection to 5642 can be achieved by soldering, conductive adhesive, or other methods. The composition is lead and cadmium free, with these substances not intentionally added.
The paste has a viscosity range of 40–70 Pa.s and uses Micromax 8250 as the recommended thinner. Reported properties are based on soda lime glass substrates. A 200–250 screen mesh is recommended, using stainless steel screens. Stir before printing; the paste should not need adjusting prior to use. To replace solvent losses from evaporation, add Micromax 8250 thinner in small increments with thorough mixing. Allow prints to level at room temperature for 5–10 minutes, then dry for 10–15 minutes at 150°C. Firing is based on a 25–30 minute cycle with 2–4 minutes at a peak temperature above 400°C. Firing may be done at higher peak temperatures up to 475°C or at longer peak times without degrading fired properties. Firing below 400°C may decrease adhesion and increase resistivity. Store sealed at 5–30°C; unopened shelf life is 6 months.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is 5642 suitable for ITO-coated glass?
The TDS lists good adhesion on glass and Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) coated glass as a product benefit. Reported properties are based on soda lime glass substrates, but the paste is also designed to bond to ITO surfaces in filter conductor applications.
Can 5642 be fired above 400°C?
Yes. The TDS states that firing may be done at higher peak temperatures up to 475°C, or at longer peak times, without degrading fired properties. Lower peak temperatures below 400°C may decrease adhesion and increase resistivity.
How does 5642 connect to other components?
The TDS states that interconnection to Micromax 5642 can be achieved by soldering, conductive adhesive, or other methods. This gives flexibility in downstream assembly depending on the filter or circuit design.
What is the firing atmosphere for 5642?
The TDS describes 5642 as an air-firing conductor. It fires in a conventional belt furnace in an air atmosphere, which is simpler than processes requiring nitrogen or other controlled atmospheres.
Does 5642 need a thinner?
The paste should not need adjusting prior to use. Stirring is recommended before printing. If solvent losses from evaporation need to be replaced, add Micromax 8250 thinner in small increments with thorough mixing.
What screen mesh works with 5642?
The TDS recommends a 200–250 screen mesh, using stainless steel screens. Reported properties are based on a 25 μm dried thickness.
How should 5642 be stored?
Store tightly sealed at 5–30°C in a clean, stable environment. Unopened shelf life is 6 months from shipment. Some settling may occur, so mix thoroughly before reuse.
