⚡ High-Conductivity Ag/AgCl Electrode Ink with Stability on High-Salt Gels
Micromax 5881 is a solvent-based silver/silver chloride composition designed for screen printing onto polyester film, suitable as an electrode or reference counter electrode for electrochemical sensors. It offers low electrode polarization, high conductivity, excellent stability on contact with high-salt gels, and excellent long-term printability.

Micromax 5881 from MacDermid Alpha is a solvent-based silver/silver chloride composition developed for screen printing onto polyester film. It is suitable for use as an electrode or reference counter electrode for electrochemical sensors, where stable electrochemical performance and long-term printability matter. The Ag:AgCl ratio of 75/25 delivers a silver-rich composition that supports high conductivity and low electrode polarization. The paste also shows excellent stability on contact with high-salt gels, which is relevant for sensor designs that use gel electrolytes.

The paste has a density of 2.96 g/cm³, solids 80.5–82.5%, and a viscosity range of 52–62 Pa.s. Micromax 8210 is the listed solvent or thinner, to be used sparingly for viscosity adjustments or to replace evaporation losses. Polyester film substrates should be used. 5881 can also be printed over silver (Micromax 5000, 5025) or over carbon (Micromax 7105). Care should be taken to minimize contact of silver/silver chloride compositions with metals, especially reactive metals such as aluminum or brass; no contact should occur. Components made of these materials can be protected by taping or covering with an inert material. It is best to use a polyester screen when printing to minimize contact with reactive metals.

Mix thoroughly with a plastic or coated spatula before use. If settling is found after long storage, mix and then jar-roll the composition sample overnight before use. A mask mesh of 280–325 is specified, with typical film thickness of 18–20 μm and theoretical coverage of 100 cm²/g. Box oven drying is 110–130°C for 8–10 minutes with adequate airflow; reel-to-reel drying is 130–140°C for 3–4 minutes with adequate airflow. Adhesion is 5B class by ASTM D3359-78, and resistivity is 20–50 mΩ/sq at 25.4 μm. Typical EKG properties show DC offset below 5 mV and AC impedance below 60 Ω. Clean-up uses ethylene glycol diacetate or dipropylene glycol methyl ether. Store sealed at 5–30°C; unopened shelf life is 6 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes 5881 suitable for high-salt gel sensors?

The TDS lists excellent stability on contact with high-salt gels as a product benefit. This matters for electrochemical sensor designs that use gel electrolytes, where the electrode must remain stable over time without degrading the printed layer.

How does the 75/25 Ag:AgCl ratio in 5881 affect performance?

A silver-rich ratio of 75/25 supports high conductivity and low electrode polarization. This differs from the chloride-rich 32/68 ratio of 5876, which is positioned as a cathode.

What EKG performance does 5881 show?

Typical EKG properties list DC offset below 5 mV and AC impedance below 60 Ω. These values support use in EKG-related sensor electrodes.

Can 5881 be printed over silver or carbon layers?

Yes. 5881 can be printed over silver (Micromax 5000, 5025) or over carbon (Micromax 7105). Avoid contact with reactive metals such as aluminum or brass, and use a polyester screen to minimize metal contact.

What are the drying conditions for 5881?

Box oven drying is 110–130°C for 8–10 minutes with adequate airflow. Reel-to-reel drying is 130–140°C for 3–4 minutes with adequate airflow.

What adhesion class does 5881 achieve?

Adhesion is 5B class per ASTM D3359-78. This supports reliable performance on polyester film substrates in sensor builds.

How should 5881 be stored?

Store tightly sealed at 5–30°C in a clean, stable environment. Unopened shelf life is 6 months from shipment. Some settling may occur, so mix thoroughly before reuse.
