⚡ Low-Polarization Ag/AgCl Ink with Stable Reference Potential
Micromax 5874 is a solvent-based silver/silver chloride composition designed for screen printing on polyester. It is suitable for use as a reference or counter electrode for electrochemical sensors, for iontophoretic anodes and cathodes, or for a variety of biomedical applications. The product offers low electrode polarization, high stability reference potential, high solids for printing thick electrodes, fast drying, and equal electrode capacity for iontophoretic anode and cathode.

Micromax 5874 from MacDermid Alpha is a solvent-based silver/silver chloride composition developed for screen printing on polyester. It is designed as a reference or counter electrode for electrochemical sensors, and is also suitable for iontophoretic anodes and cathodes as well as a range of biomedical applications. The Ag:AgCl ratio is 65/35, and the high solids content supports printing thick electrodes for stable performance.

The paste carries 83.4–86.4% solids, density 3.39 g/cm³, and a viscosity range of 23–35 Pa.s. Micromax 3610 is the listed solvent or thinner. Only print-treated polyester film substrate should be used. Micromax 5874 can also be printed over silver (Micromax 5000, 5025) or over carbon (Micromax 7102). Care should be taken to minimize contact of silver/silver chloride compositions with metals, especially reactive metals such as aluminum or brass; no contact should occur. Components made of these materials can be protected by taping or covering with an inert material. It is best to use a polyester screen when printing to minimize contact with reactive metals.

Mix thoroughly with a plastic or stainless-steel spatula before use. If severe settling is found after long storage, mix and then jar-roll the ink sample overnight before use. Drying is 1–2 minutes in well-ventilated ovens or conveyor dryers at 120°C, or 3–5 minutes in a box oven at 120°C. Clean-up uses ethylene glycol diacetate or dipropylene glycol methyl ether. Typical physical properties include coat weight of 11 mg/cm² on a 160-mesh screen, with Ag depletion (anode) and AgCl depletion (cathode) each exceeding 40 minutes. Store sealed at 5–30°C; unopened shelf life is 3 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of electrode applications is 5874 designed for?

The TDS positions 5874 as a reference or counter electrode for electrochemical sensors, and also suitable for iontophoretic anodes and cathodes, or for a variety of biomedical applications. Low electrode polarization and high stability reference potential are listed as product benefits.

What is the Ag:AgCl ratio in 5874 and why does it matter?

The TDS lists the Ag:AgCl ratio as 65/35. This ratio determines the electrochemical balance of the printed layer, and 5874 is also noted for equal electrode capacity between iontophoretic anode and cathode.

Can 5874 be printed over silver or carbon layers?

Yes. 5874 can be printed over silver (Micromax 5000, 5025) or over carbon (Micromax 7102). Use a polyester screen when printing to minimize contact with reactive metals, and avoid any contact with aluminum or brass.

What substrate does 5874 require?

Only print-treated polyester film substrate should be used. Substrates of different composition or from different manufacturers may result in variations in performance, so qualification on the target substrate is recommended.

Why is metal contact a concern with Ag/AgCl inks?

The TDS advises minimizing contact of silver/silver chloride compositions with metals, especially reactive metals such as aluminum or brass. Components made of these materials can be protected by taping or covering with an inert material.

How should 5874 be mixed before printing?

Mix thoroughly with a plastic or stainless-steel spatula before use. If severe settling is found after long storage, mix and then jar-roll the ink sample overnight before use.

How should 5874 be stored?

Store tightly sealed at 5–30°C in a clean, stable environment. Unopened shelf life is 3 months from shipment. Some settling may occur, so mix thoroughly before reuse.
