Type: Platable Ag/Pd C1 Termination
Application: Chip Resistor
Pd Content: 2%
Shelf Life: 6 months
Micromax 5424 is a high performance platable silver/palladium C1 termination for chip resistors. It combines high resolution screen printing, high green strength, fast firing on an 850°C/30 min profile, high acid resistance, and excellent post-plating adhesion. Cadmium free, with 2% palladium content.
Micromax 5424 from MacDermid Alpha is a high performance platable silver/palladium C1 termination paste developed specifically for chip resistor applications. It delivers high resolution screen printing with high green strength, which supports fine feature definition and reliable handling before firing. Fast firing on an 850°C / 30 min profile keeps production cycles short, and high acid resistance plus excellent post-plating adhesion ensure the termination holds up through subsequent plating steps. The formulation is cadmium free and contains 2% palladium.
The paste has a viscosity range of 150–250 Pa.s and uses Micromax 4553 as the recommended thinner. Reported properties are based on 96% alumina substrates, printed with a 250 mesh stainless steel screen with approximately 8 μm emulsion to a dried print thickness of 18 ± 2 μm. Allow prints to level at room temperature for 5–10 minutes, then dry at 150°C for 10 minutes. Fire using a 30-minute cycle with 10 minutes at a peak of 850°C; equivalent performance is obtained on a 60-minute firing cycle with the same 850°C peak. Axarel 2200, a non-CFC alternative, is the recommended clean-up solvent. Store sealed at 5–30°C; unopened shelf life is 6 months.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does high resolution screen printing mean for 5424?
The TDS lists high resolution screen printing and high green strength as product characteristics. For chip resistors, this supports fine feature definition and reliable handling before firing, especially with a 250 mesh screen and 8 μm emulsion.
Can 5424 run on both 30-minute and 60-minute firing cycles?
Yes. The TDS states that properties are based on a 30-minute firing cycle with 10 minutes at 850°C peak, and that equivalent performance is obtained on a 60-minute cycle with the same 850°C peak. This gives flexibility on different furnace configurations.
Why does 5424 specify Axarel 2200 for clean-up?
Axarel 2200 is a non-CFC alternative recommended in the TDS. Traditional screen cleaners also work, but Axarel 2200 aligns with environmental requirements for non-CFC cleaning processes.
What Pd content does 5424 use?
5424 contains 2% palladium. This sits between the 18% Pd of 5418 and the 0.5% Pd of 5421E, giving a middle option for cost and performance depending on the resistor design.
What screen configuration is recommended for 5424?
A 250 mesh stainless steel screen with approximately 8 μm emulsion, printed to a dried thickness of 18 ± 2 μm. Reported properties are based on 96% alumina substrates.
Is 5424 cadmium free?
Per the TDS, cadmium is not intentionally added to 5424. Trace amounts may be present. Customers with strict compliance thresholds should verify against their own requirements.
What thinner should be used with 5424?
Micromax 4553 is the listed solvent or thinner. Thinning is not normally required, but Micromax 4553 is recommended for minor adjustments to viscosity.
