描述

VESTAMID X7293 NC is a natural-color, high-viscosity, plasticized, impact-modified, heat- and light-stabilized polyamide 12 compound from Evonik Operations GmbH developed for flexible tubing and hose extrusion, especially in automotive applications.

The grade is specifically aligned with important automotive tubing standards. Evonik identifies VESTAMID X7293 NC for applications according to DIN 73378, PA12-HIPHL Type 1, ISO/DIN 7628-1, PA12-HIPEHL Type 1, and SAE J844.

These classifications are useful because they describe more than the polymer family. They indicate a PA12 formulation engineered for a combination of high impact resistance, plasticization, heat stabilization and light stabilization.

The natural-color grade is particularly useful when the customer wants to apply downstream coloration, use identification colors, or manufacture tubing where black pigmentation is not required.

A major advantage of VESTAMID X7293 NC is its balance of flexibility and impact strength. Current grade-specific data shows a dry tensile modulus of approximately 390 MPa, yield stress around 25 MPa, stress at break around 41 MPa, and nominal strain at break approximately 235%.

This mechanical profile confirms that the material is designed as a highly ductile tubing compound rather than as a rigid structural PA12.

Low-temperature toughness is one of the strongest features. Current ISO Charpy data shows no break at 23°C, 0°C, -20°C and -30°C in the unnotched test. The current pipe-specific SAE J844 data also records zero breaks out of ten specimens at -40°C after both boiling-water conditioning and 110°C heat pretreatment.

That pipe-specific cold-impact result is especially valuable for automotive applications because tubing can experience severe cold during vehicle storage and operation.

PA12 also offers much lower moisture sensitivity than shorter-chain polyamides. Current grade data lists approximately 0.7% humidity absorption, helping tube dimensions and mechanical properties remain relatively stable as ambient humidity changes.

Another major advantage is chemical resistance. Current grade information includes testing against motor oil, insulating oil, ISO reference fuels, alcohol-containing fuels, diesel, Diesel EN 590, methanol, ethanol, iso-octane, toluene, DOT 4 brake fluid, salt solutions and water.

The grade is also characterized by a low coefficient of friction and general chemical resistance, both of which are useful in routed automotive lines and moving assemblies.

Current pipe data further shows a burst hoop stress of approximately 24.5 MPa at 23°C in water and approximately 10.5 MPa at 100°C in oil under the historical DIN 53758 test method. These values help illustrate the pressure-tube capability of the compound.

Why Choose VESTAMID X7293 NC?

The main reason to choose VESTAMID X7293 NC is its combination of high flexibility, low-temperature toughness and chemical resistance.

Automotive tubing is exposed to repeated bending, vibration and thermal cycling. A line can be routed through tight spaces, clipped to moving assemblies and exposed to impact during vehicle use or service.

The 235% nominal strain at break of VESTAMID X7293 NC demonstrates the high ductility required for this kind of application.

Low-temperature performance is equally important. Many tubing materials become more brittle as temperature falls. X7293 NC retains no-break unnotched Charpy behavior down to -30°C, and the SAE J844 tube test shows zero breaks at -40°C after demanding pretreatments.

The PA12 base resin also keeps moisture absorption low. This helps tube dimensions and flexibility remain more stable than in more hygroscopic PA6 or PA66 systems.

Fuel and oil resistance are another major advantage. The current grade-specific dataset includes diesel, alcohol-containing fuels, motor oil, brake fluid and multiple hydrocarbon test media.

The natural-color format also creates flexibility for customers who want to compound or identify tubing in colors other than black.

For customers requiring a proven PA12-HIPHL / PA12-HIPEHL Type 1 automotive tube compound, VESTAMID X7293 NC is a highly targeted option.

Processing Guidelines for VESTAMID X7293 NC

VESTAMID X7293 NC supports:

  • Pipe / tube extrusion
  • Profile extrusion
  • Other extrusion
  • Injection molding

Current grade-specific processing references are:

Processing Parameter Published Value
General Melt Temperature Range 200–240°C
Mold Temperature Range 30–100°C
ISO Test Melt Temperature 220°C
ISO Test Mold Temperature 60°C
ISO Test Injection Velocity 200 mm/s
ISO Test Holding Pressure 70 MPa

For actual tubing extrusion, the line should be optimized for:

  • Feed-zone temperature
  • Compression-zone temperature
  • Metering-zone temperature
  • Adapter and die temperature
  • Screw speed
  • Melt pressure
  • Line speed
  • Tube outside diameter
  • Wall thickness
  • Draw-down
  • Vacuum sizing
  • Cooling-water flow
  • Ovality
  • Surface quality

Evonik’s PA12 processing guide notes that typical VESTAMID tubing uses conventional extrusion dies, with careful attention to sizing and water-film control because incorrect water flow at the calibration inlet is a common cause of tubing defects.

Material is supplied ready for processing in moisture-proof packaging. If packaging is damaged or granules have absorbed moisture, dry the material according to the latest Evonik PA12 processing recommendations before extrusion.
