MacDermid Alpha Micromax 6118A Plateable LTCC Silver Conductor for Wire Bonding and Brazing
Type: Plateable LTCC Silver Conductor
System: GreenTape 951 & 9K7
Plating: Electroless Ni/Au
Shelf Life: 6 months
Micromax 6118A is a co-fired silver plateable conductor for Micromax 951 and 9K7 GreenTape systems. It offers high conductivity, electroless Ni/Au plateability, wirebondability with 1 mil Au wire after plating, brazeability with Au80/Sn20 after plating, and is lead free and cadmium free. Micromax 6118H can be blended in to adjust viscosity when needed.
Micromax 6118A from MacDermid Alpha is a co-fired silver plateable conductor developed for use with Micromax 951 and 9K7 GreenTape low temperature co-fired ceramic systems. It is positioned for LTCC circuits that require a platable silver conductor layer, supporting electroless Ni/Au plating followed by wire bonding or brazing. Micromax 6118H is available as a blend member to adjust the viscosity of 6118A when needed. The composition is lead free and cadmium free, with these substances not intentionally added.
After Ni/Au plating with 40–80 microinch Au, 1 mil Au wire bonding on 6118A exceeds 11 g after 1000 hours at 150°C and after 1000 TCA cycles from -40 to 125°C. Pin brazing with 80Au/20Sn exceeds 15 pounds after 1000 hours at 150°C and exceeds 10 pounds after 1000 TCA. These performance results were obtained using laboratory test patterns and are not intended to be product specifications. Appropriate plating conditions are required and results may vary; contact Micromax technical service for recommendations.
The composition should be thoroughly mixed before use by slow, gentle hand stirring with a clean burr-free flexible plastic spatula for 1–2 minutes, avoiding air entrapment. Optimum printing characteristics are generally achieved at 20–23°C. Print thickness must be controlled at 15–22 μm dried for optimum performance. A 325-mesh stainless steel screen with 1.1 mil wire at 45 degree mesh angle and less than 0.5 mil emulsion is recommended. Micromax 8250 is the recommended thinner for slight viscosity adjustments. Allow prints to level 5–10 minutes at room temperature, then dry at 80–120°C for 5–10 minutes. Laminate multiple printed GreenTape layers at 3000 psi and 70°C for 10 minutes. Consult the Micromax GreenTape 951 and 9K7 technical data sheets for firing recommendations; these systems require a special 26-hour firing profile. For brazing, a special profile with a peak temperature of 300°C for 5 minutes in nitrogen is recommended. Store sealed at 5–30°C; unopened shelf life is 6 months.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does 6118A need Ni/Au plating before wire bonding or brazing?
The TDS lists electroless Ni/Au plateability as a product benefit. Wire bonding and brazing performance data are reported after plating with 40–80 microinch Au, so the plated layer is part of the intended process flow for those downstream operations.
What wire bonding strength does 6118A achieve after aging?
1 mil Au wire bonding exceeds 11 g after 1000 hours at 150°C and after 1000 TCA cycles from -40 to 125°C. These results were obtained using laboratory test patterns after Ni/Au plating.
How is 6118H used with 6118A?
The TDS states that Micromax 6118H is a blend member used to adjust the viscosity of Micromax 6118A when needed. This gives flexibility in matching the paste to the desired printing conditions.
What firing profile does 6118A require?
The TDS directs users to consult the Micromax GreenTape 951 and 9K7 technical data sheets for firing recommendations. These systems require a special 26-hour firing profile. Contact your Micromax technical representative for details.
What brazing profile is recommended for 6118A?
The TDS recommends a special profile with a peak temperature of 300°C for 5 minutes in nitrogen. Contact Micromax technical for further details on brazing conditions.
What print thickness does 6118A require?
Print thickness must be controlled at 15–22 μm dried for optimum performance. A 325-mesh stainless steel screen with 1.1 mil wire at 45 degree mesh angle and less than 0.5 mil emulsion is recommended.
Is 6118A lead free and cadmium free?
Per the TDS, lead and cadmium are not intentionally added to 6118A. Trace amounts may be present. Customers with strict compliance thresholds should verify against their own requirements.
