Micromax 5450H from MacDermid Alpha is a polymeric platable silver C2 edge termination developed for chip resistor and chip component applications. It is designed to meet the needs of lower cost and high yield while maintaining high performance over fired-type C2 edge termination. The composition uses a thermoset resin in a single-component format, which simplifies handling. It cures at low temperature (200°C for 30 minutes) and provides high plated adhesion, stable viscosity and rheology, good pliability, and good conductivity. The formulation is lead, cadmium, nickel, and phthalate free.
The paste has a viscosity range of 35–40 Pa.s. Micromax 9245 is the recommended thinner, though thinning is not normally required since the composition is optimized for screen printing. Reported properties are based on 96% alumina substrates. A drying step prior to curing is recommended: allow parts to level at room temperature, then dry. Cure with 30 minutes at a peak of 200°C. Store sealed at 0–5°C; room temperature storage is not recommended. Unopened shelf life is 3 months from date of shipment.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does 5450H differ from 5450?
5450H is a C2 edge termination applied by screen printing, with viscosity 35–40 Pa.s. 5450 is also a platable silver composition for chip resistor edge termination but is applied by dipping, with viscosity 18–20 Pa.s. Both cure at 200°C for 30 minutes and are stored refrigerated.
Why does 5450H use a thermoset resin?
The TDS lists thermoset resin as a key product benefit. A thermoset network provides a stable cured film after the 200°C / 30-minute cure, which supports consistent plated adhesion, stable rheology before cure, and good pliability after cure.
What curing schedule does 5450H require?
Cure with 30 minutes at a peak of 200°C. A drying step prior to curing is recommended: allow parts to level at room temperature, then dry.
Why is stable viscosity important for 5450H?
The TDS lists stable viscosity and rheology as a product benefit. For screen printing, stable rheology helps keep printed geometry consistent across a print run, which matters for C2 edge terminations on small chip components.
How should 5450H be stored?
Store refrigerated at 0–5°C. Room temperature storage is not recommended. Unopened shelf life is 3 months. Allow the material to equilibrate to room temperature before opening to prevent moisture pickup from condensation.
Is 5450H free of lead, cadmium, nickel and phthalate?
Per the TDS, lead, cadmium, nickel, and phthalate are not intentional ingredients and are not intentionally added. Trace amounts may be present. Customers with strict compliance thresholds should verify against their own requirements.
What thinner should be used with 5450H?
Micromax 9245 is the recommended thinner. The composition is optimized for screen printing, and thinning is not normally required. Use the recommended thinner only for minor adjustments.
