⚡ Tight Post-Trim Stability in a Blendable PTC Series
Micromax 5092D is a positive temperature coefficient thermistor composition for thick film microcircuits. It delivers linear resistance versus temperature response and high positive TCR, with post laser trim stability below 0.2% at 25°C, 85%RH/85°C, and 150°C over 1000 hours. Blendable with 5091D and 5093D.

Micromax 5092D from MacDermid Alpha is a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistor composition developed for thick film microcircuits using conventional thick film processing. It belongs to the blendable 5091D / 5092D / 5093D series, which allows resistance and TCR tuning without changing process conditions. Target applications include temperature sensors, temperature compensation elements, and heaters. Post laser trim stability is one of the tightest in the series: below 0.2% across all three test conditions.

The paste has a viscosity range of 150–250 Pa.s and uses Micromax 4553 as the recommended thinner. Terminations are typically Micromax 7484 Ag/Pd prefired at 850°C; Ag Micromax 6160 has also been tested. Print with a 200-mesh stainless steel screen with 15±3 μm emulsion to a dried print thickness of 25±2 μm. Allow prints to level 5–10 minutes, then dry 10–15 minutes at 150°C. Fire on a 30-minute profile with a 10-minute peak at 850°C. Post laser trim stability is <0.2% at 25°C/1000 hrs, <0.2% at 85%RH/85°C/1000 hrs, and <0.2% at 150°C/1000 hrs. Glass encapsulation is not generally required, but Micromax 9137 or QQ550 fired at 500°C is recommended when mechanical or environmental protection is needed. Store sealed at 5–30°C; unopened shelf life is 6 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does 5092D's post-trim stability compare within the series?

5092D shows below 0.2% post laser trim stability across all three test conditions: 25°C/1000 hrs, 85%RH/85°C/1000 hrs, and 150°C/1000 hrs. This is tighter than 5091D at the 25°C and 150°C conditions, where 5091D is below 0.3%.

How can I blend 5092D with other grades in the series?

The TDS lists 5091D, 5092D, and 5093D as a blendable series. Blending allows you to tune resistance and TCR toward a specific target without changing the printing, drying, or firing conditions.

Which terminations work with 5092D?

Reported properties are based on Micromax 7484 Ag/Pd conductor prefired at 850°C. Excellent results have also been obtained with Ag Micromax 6160, prefired at 850°C.

Can 5092D handle laser trimming consistently?

Post laser trim stability is below 0.2% at 25°C over 1000 hours, below 0.2% at 85%RH/85°C over 1000 hours, and below 0.2% at 150°C over 1000 hours. The test used 1.5×1.5mm resistors trimmed to 1.5× initial value with a single plunge cut.

Does 5092D require glass encapsulation?

In general, no. The TDS notes glass encapsulation is not required for standard use. For mechanical protection or extreme environments such as high temperature nitrogen or forming gas, Micromax 9137 or QQ550 fired at 500°C is recommended.

Does firing profile variation affect 5092D?

Yes. The TDS notes that longer firing profiles or higher peak temperatures will cause slight variation in resistance and TCR. Keeping the recommended 30-minute profile with a 10-minute peak at 850°C helps maintain the rated values.

What thinner should be used with 5092D?

Micromax 4553 is the listed solvent or thinner. Using the recommended thinner helps keep viscosity and print behavior consistent with the TDS values.
