Halogen free and cadmium, lead, nickel, and phthalate free.
Micromax 5491B from MacDermid Alpha is a polymer composition encapsulant developed for encapsulation on metal plate chip resistors, especially for high power and high operating temperature applications. It is designed to maintain stability at higher operating temperatures than standard encapsulants, with a thermoset process at 220°C for 30 minutes. The cured film remains black both before and after curing, which gives a consistent appearance on the resistor body. The composition applies to metal plate chip resistors as well as thick film chip resistors, giving flexibility across resistor types. It is halogen free per IEC 61249-2-21, and cadmium, lead, nickel, and phthalate are not intentionally added.
The paste carries a viscosity range of 45–75 Pa.s and uses Micromax 9245(T) as the recommended thinner. Non-volatile content at 150°C is 83–88%. Print with a 325 mesh stainless steel screen with 10 μm emulsion and a 70 durometer squeegee to a cured thickness of 30 μm ± 5 μm. Bring the material to 20–23°C before printing. Allow prints to level for 5 minutes at room temperature, then dry for 10 minutes at 110–150°C. Cure at 220°C for 30 minutes; conditions should be optimized for the type of dryer used. Store refrigerated during transportation and at frozen temperature below −10°C after receipt. Room temperature storage is not recommended. Unopened shelf life is 3 months from date of shipment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is 5491B suited to metal plate chip resistors?
The TDS states that 5491B is intended for encapsulation on metal plate chip resistors, especially for high power and high operating temperature applications. Its high thermal durability and 220°C curing schedule make it suitable for these demanding conditions.
Why does 5491B cure at 220°C instead of 180–200°C?
The higher curing temperature supports high thermal durability, which is the key requirement for metal plate chip resistors in high power and high operating temperature applications. The TDS specifies 220°C for 30 minutes.
Is 5491B halogen free?
Yes. The TDS states that 5491B is halogen free as defined in industry standard IEC 61249-2-21. Trace amounts may be present.
What color is 5491B before and after curing?
The TDS lists black color prior to and after curing as a product benefit. Keeping the same color before and after curing helps maintain consistent appearance on the resistor body.
What is the cured thickness of 5491B?
Cured thickness is 30 μm ± 5 μm. This is achieved with a 325 mesh stainless steel screen, 10 μm emulsion thickness, and a 70 durometer squeegee.
How should 5491B be stored?
Keep refrigerated during transportation and store at frozen temperature below −10°C after receipt. Room temperature storage is not recommended. Unopened shelf life is 3 months. Allow the material to equilibrate to room temperature before opening to prevent moisture pickup from condensation.
What is the non-volatile content of 5491B?
Non-volatile content measured at 150°C is 83–88%. This is higher than many solvent-based encapsulants, which supports thicker films at the specified cured thickness.
