描述

VESTAMID LX9042 NC is a natural-color, heat-stabilized polyamide 12 compound from Evonik Operations GmbH developed for efficient injection molding with short cycle times.

The defining feature of VESTAMID LX9042 NC is its highly effective mold-release system. Evonik states that the grade is designed for easy demolding, making it particularly suitable for parts that must be produced efficiently and consistently in high-volume injection-molding operations.

In addition to the mold-release package, VESTAMID LX9042 NC is nucleated. Nucleation accelerates crystallization during cooling, which can help reduce cycle time further and may also reduce post-shrinkage. This combination of mold-release additives and nucleation gives the grade a strong processing advantage over unmodified PA12 grades when productivity is important.

The material retains the characteristic benefits of PA12. Its low moisture absorption means that molded parts show relatively little change in dimensions and mechanical properties as ambient humidity changes. This is especially important for precision components, snap-fit parts, fluid-system components and other molded parts with tight dimensional requirements.

Current grade-specific data lists a melt volume-flow rate of approximately 9 cm³/10 min at 220°C / 2.16 kg, with balanced molding shrinkage of approximately 0.7% parallel and 0.7% normal. The balanced shrinkage profile supports dimensional consistency in injection-molded components.

Mechanical performance is also strong. VESTAMID LX9042 NC has a tensile modulus of approximately 1,600 MPa, yield stress of approximately 47 MPa, yield strain of approximately 11%, and nominal strain at break above 50%.

Unnotched Charpy specimens show no break at 23°C, while typical notched impact strength is approximately 4.6 kJ/m² at both 23°C and -30°C. The material is therefore not simply a processing-optimized PA12; it still provides the toughness expected from the VESTAMID PA12 family.

The grade is also characterized by a low coefficient of friction and good general chemical resistance. Current material information identifies it as a tribological grade, making it relevant where sliding contact or low-friction behavior is useful.

Another important point for selected water-contact projects is that VESTAMID LX9042 NC currently appears in the WRAS approval directory as an injection-molded PA12 material for use with water up to 85°C, with approval number 2306565 and expiry date 30 June 2028. It is also listed in current French ACS material approvals for accessory components.

Why Choose VESTAMID LX9042 NC?

The main reason to choose VESTAMID LX9042 NC is production efficiency.

Standard PA12 already offers toughness, chemical resistance and dimensional stability, but injection-molded parts can still be limited by cooling time and demolding behavior.

The release-agent package in VESTAMID LX9042 NC helps the molded component separate from the tool more efficiently. This can reduce ejection problems, minimize sticking and support more stable automated production.

Nucleation adds a second productivity advantage. Faster crystallization can reduce the time required before the part has enough rigidity for ejection. It can also help reduce post-shrinkage, which is useful for precision molded parts.

The balanced published shrinkage of 0.7% parallel and 0.7% normal is particularly attractive where the mold designer wants predictable dimensional behavior.

The grade also retains PA12 toughness and low moisture sensitivity. This allows manufacturers to improve process efficiency without moving to a more moisture-sensitive engineering polymer.

For water-contact applications, the current WRAS and ACS listings add another potential advantage when the component design falls within the relevant approval conditions.

Processing Guidelines for VESTAMID LX9042 NC

VESTAMID LX9042 NC is intended primarily for injection molding.

Evonik supplies VESTAMID compounds dry in moisture-proof packaging. Material from intact original packaging is generally ready for processing. If the bag has been damaged or the pellets have been exposed to ambient air for an extended period, drying is recommended.

General Evonik guidance for unplasticized PA12 is:

Processing Parameter General PA12 Guidance
Drying Temperature 80–100°C
Drying Time 2–4 hours
Target Moisture <0.1%
General Mold Temperature Range 30–100°C
Primary Process for LX9042 NC Injection Molding

For VESTAMID LX9042 NC, actual melt temperature, mold temperature, injection speed, holding pressure and cooling time should be optimized around part geometry, wall thickness and cycle-time target.

Because the grade is nucleated and contains an effective mold-release system, processors should avoid overcompensating with excessive external mold-release agents. The built-in formulation is already intended to improve ejection.

For short-cycle production, the mold-cooling system should be designed carefully. Uniform cooling helps the nucleated PA12 crystallize consistently and supports dimensional repeatability.

Pigmentation may affect property values, so colored versions should be qualified separately where critical properties or regulatory approvals matter.
